Employee Communications

Effective communication with employees is the key to a company’s success. Employees want to know that their company legitimately cares about them, and they want to feel that they are welcome to give feedback. More often than not, having good internal communications within a company is directly correlated to its achievements.

Many organizations make the mistake of putting other forms of communication before their employees, such as advertising, public relations, and so on. Successful businesses put their employees at the same level as their customers. Focusing inward rather than outward has impact on how dedicated employees are, and thus, how satisfied clients will be. It is essential to keep employees actively engaged in moving forward.

Disturbing Statistics

In 2001, a Gallup survey showed that only twenty-six percent of workers in the U.S. are actively engaged in their jobs. This twenty-six percent generates almost all of the profit in organizations. Nineteen percent of workers are aiming to negatively impact their places of work. The rest are basically indifferent to company aspirations. There are several ways to get more employees actively engaged in an organization.

Tactics for Building Employee Respect

Managers should be dependable in what they say and do. This will help build trust within the company. Employees should be communicated to first with important news. Accomplishments should be noticed and rewarded accordingly. If possible, a newsletter should be sent to employees to keep them informed of the company’s current situation and objectives. This will help them feel more informed and more like the integral part of the company that they are. When communicating with employees, it should not be a one-way system. They should feel comfortable in giving feedback to management in order to build higher understanding within the company. Communication to employees should always be honest and upfront. These people so vital to the organization should be treated with utmost respect.

It is important to remain consistent with internal communications. Inconsistent messages will confuse and frustrate employees. Internal and external communications should coincide with one another. What employees are told and what customers and the public are told should fit together. Excellent consumer communications matched with excellent internal communications is a very strong combination, which is why communicating to employees should not be an optional expense; it should be planned and budgeted for.

Effective employee communications are imperative to running a successful organization. Building trusting relationships with employees ensures they will be actively engaged in your company, which in turn, results in highly satisfied customers. A company cannot afford to sacrifice internal communications, because it is the employees who drive its success. They are the ones who deliver the company’s brand promise to the end-user.
